The Programme

The New Hospital Programme (NHP) is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fundamentally transform how healthcare is delivered in the UK and to create future where world-class healthcare is a reality, going beyond simply renewing hospital infrastructure.

The NHP's approach is built on standardised operating models and infrastructure designs, enabling safer, more efficient care delivery and faster, more sustainable hospital construction. This framework balances standardisation with local flexibility, ensuring each new hospital is tailored to the unique needs of its community and workforce. Integration of innovative digital solutions and technology is a cornerstone in delivery of NHP. ​

The programme aims to deliver benefits across four key pillars:​

The Academy

The NHP Academy is the gateway to transforming healthcare delivery across the UK.​

It's mission is to empower the workforce of today and tomorrow with the essential skills and knowledge needed to design, build, and operate the next generation of smart, sustainable, and digitally advanced hospitals. It supports a key strategic objective of the NHP: to develop a sustainable, nationwide capability to deliver national healthcare infrastructure more efficiently for future generations, ensuring modern, efficient hospitals that align with best practices.

Our Goals

This initiative will:

• Address Critical Skills Gaps: Adapt to emerging needs through a continuously evolving curriculum.
• Accelerate Knowledge Sharing: Upskill the national workforce to build critical capabilities required to deliver the NHP's benefits, support the NHS 10-Year Plan, and contribute to the Government's "Plan for Change" missions.
• Create a Lasting Legacy: Provide unparalleled career development and employment opportunities, fostering an innovative and sustainable future workforce able to lead and support the NHS with digitally enhanced infrastructure delivery.
• Digital Platform: The NHP Academy provides a coordinated digital platform for learning, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, fostering a dynamic learning culture and optimising education, training, and employment opportunities through digital and construction-specific groups and apprenticeship schemes.

Our Flagship Programmes

The Academy will launch with three flagship programmes over the coming year:

• Essential Digital and AI Skills: Supporting the workforce to acquire essential digital skills, increase confidence in using digital tools and support the transition to a digitally enabled hospital environment.
• Industrialisation Apprenticeships: Supporting the development of knowledge and skills in industrialisation and modern methods of construction, creating opportunities for underrepresented groups and building regional skills.
• Transformational Leadership: Supporting Wave 1 scheme leaders to build capability in navigating organisational change and instilling key cultural and behavioural practices, such as quality improvement.
